Ignatius had a vision of his people
going anywhere in the world
for the good of souls, as he put it
In Jesuit culture, there's a lot of respect for autonomy.
The autonomy of the person,
and for the way in which God works on the person,
uh, individually.
One can influence people, and persuade them in certain directions,
not by what one says,
but just to observe what Ignatius calls
“The movement of the spirits” in the person.
Letting them do the talking,
asking the occasional question,
and integrating what they're saying
into the overall story of their lives.
One does not need to have a heavy hand
telling people what to do.
It would be a presumptuous director
or priest who would simply say,
  “God tells me what you ought to do.”
Um, and uh, I think most Jesuits are,
are happy to stay away from that.
